Project: Application of Data Mining Techniques and Statistics in Business, Academic and Government Processes for Decision Making
Research Line: Computational Intelligence
Starting Year: 2010
Description: Currently, the evolution of Information Technology (IT) brought benefits to business, academic and government processes to manage and store significant amounts of data. Decision support systems evolved to support decision making in areas of strategic planning, management control and operations control in organizations. The objective of this project is to implement techniques of data mining and statistics to support decision makings in the business, academic and government processes, improving the quality in service.

Project: Development of Methodologies and Innovation in Discrete Event System Simulation
Research Line: Computational Intelligence
Starting Year: 2010
Description: The project aims at analyzing and investigating discrete event systems commonly obtained in industrial and logistics processes. The research line approaches the four following aspects: (1) Analysis of the modelling of dynamic and stochastic systems; (2) Design of a computational environment for constructing discrete event simulation models (Ururau software); (3) Integration of discrete event simulation models with automatic control systems and optimization models; and (4) Investigation on application of simulators for training and teaching using development environments of discrete event simulation models.

Project: Development, Application, and Comparison of Methodologies for the Evaluation of Quality in Service
Research Line: Combinatory Optimization
Starting year: 2010
Description: The aim of the project is to identify critical points to be improved in a company by means of the application of methods, such as simple satisfaction, multiplicative approach, GAP, servqual, importance vs. satisfaction, segmentation and focusing of market, and demographic methods applied to non-human population, as well as to develop a new analysis method, called Weighted Ranking. This method, which has a statistical foundation, has been developing. It sees the importance and satisfaction of clients, as well as the effort to improve services. That one will be compared to other existing methods by case studies in various sectors.

Project: Operations Management and Business Logistics
Research Line: Combinatorial Optimization
Starting Year: 2010
Description: The Industrial Management project refers to the contents of design and management of industrial systems, (PPC) (Planning and Production Control), Logistics and supply chain, work organization and ergonomics, quality management, costs and performance measure, simulation, project management. The project aims at identifying views, methods, and tools and proposing directives for the production management in various business sectors. The following aspects are approached in the project: (a) Research of the different processes and activities that produce value in the form of products and services that are delivered to the final consumer; (b) The projects of the product and production, the set of operations proceedings, the purchase orders, the documents and mechanisms of control of production; (c) Integration between work organization and its adequacy for people; and (d) Investigation and development of computational tools that help the tasks of planning and control of production in manufacture systems, emphasizing the aspects of optimization of the costs involved.

Project: Decision Methods Applied to Sustainable Development
Research Line: Combinatorial Optimization
Starting Year: 2010
Description: The objective of this project is to present correct and equitable solutions to social and environmental problems concerning the North Region of Rio de Janeiro State by means of tools of multicriteria decision aid and by the application of demographic and technical methods on diverse problems associated with the decision process of companies and private or public companies. The lines of action of the project aim at using the renewable natural resources for agriculture and energy purposes in the application of water resources and in the assessment of social and economic impacts of large economic companies. The following aspects are approached by the projects: a) Use of water resources, agriculture waste, solar and wind energy, and final destination of liquid effluents in small inland communities; b) Decision support system to select soils; c) Studies on population dynamics of national, local and regional workforce; d) Demographic analysis of impacts on human populations; and e) Localization and measurement of the needs of public and private equipment. Solutions are expected for the regional problems and the offer of new opportunities for the application of natural resources of the region with the performance of these projects.

Project: Combinatorial Optimization Techniques Applied on the Solution of Problems in the North of Rio de Janeiro State, Brazil
Research Line: Combinatorial Optimization
Starting Year: 2007
Description: Currently, Petrobras (a public national oil company) counts on one of the most modern technologies for the extraction of oil in deep water. However, some actions not directly related to oil extraction still have not had the best technology. For example, some tasks carried out in the Port of Sepetiba (Bacia de Campos) can be cited, such as supply transport, using ships, which consists of the transportation of material (supplies) from the coast (port) to the maritime units (platforms) and vice-versa; the choice of the best attending sequence of ships, which need to be filled with supplies in the port; transport services for air travelers from the port to the platforms; allocation of tasks and special boats (boats responsible for maintenance and underwater inspections); among others.
Today, the oil and gas sector represents one of the most dynamic areas of the national economy, and Rio de Janeiro State enjoys a unique situation, as the fields of the continental platform of the Bacia de Campos (Campos Basis) concentrate about 90% of the current Brazilian production. Years ago, the producer municipalities (also states) started receiving royalties, which, in a short time, have become the main income of those municipalities. Nowadays, the municipalities of Bacia de Campos, (North Region of Rio de Janeiro State) constitute one of the regions of the largest economic growth of our country.
The main goal of this project is the design and implementation of efficient computational systems for existent problems in the North of Rio de Janeiro State. In these systems, algorithms are elaborated, which use techniques of combinatorial optimization, more specifically metaheuristics. Among the metaheuristics most used in this project, there are the Genetic Algorithms and the GRASP and VNS metaheuristic.
