Computer Laboratories

All the laboratories of the Universidade Candido Mendes-Campos are located on the ground floor, thus not necessary to use the stairs or the access ramp. The doorways have, at minimum, 75cm length, more than enough to a wheelchair user to pass.

It opens from Monday to Friday, from 7.30 am to 10.30 pm, and on Saturdays from 7.30 am to 5.30 pm; both timetables are continuous.

There is a central room for the servers, with computers that provide the logic infrastructure needed for the operation of the laboratories.

Currently, the University has six microcomputer laboratories in a total area of 300 m2. All of them have air conditioners, natural and artificial light, swivel and padded chairs, whiteboard, and television or multimedia projector coupled to computers. It also has a printing center with one laser printer available for the students.

The Institution holds a dedicated 60-megabit optic fiber link, which is distributed, on a demand basis, among the administrative sectors, cable and wireless academic network.

All laboratories are connected to the Internet by the cable network, also with authentication by registration number and with 50 MB of server space for individual storage of short works.

The microcomputers of the laboratories have constant access to the Internet, with 60 Mbps link contracted with the company Forte Telecom, as well as Wireless Network.

Some computers have the DOSVOX software version 4.5 developed by the Núcleo de Computação Eletrônica da UFRJ (Electronic Computer Center of UFRJ), to attend to the visually impaired, allowing blind people to use the personal computer, besides headphones.

There are two mobile laboratories each one with 36 laptops, totaling 72 computers in two recharge stations that take turns, and can be taken to the classrooms to be used by the students.

All laboratory configurations are displayed below:

  1. Laboratory of Computational Intelligence and SimulationLaboratório de Inteligência Computacional e Simulação – LABICS

The purpose is the development of techniques and processes in the areas of Computational Intelligence and Simulation. Specifically, the research areas are as follows:
    – Artificial Neural Networks and Genetic Algorithms
    – Digital Image Process
    – Discrete Event Simulation

It occupies 12 m2 and has ten computers, two Programming Logic Controllers, a bench for digital logic activation, among others.

Almost all resources of the laboratory were acquired from projects together with funding agencies, such as Fundação de Amparo à Pesquisa do Estado do Rio de Janeiro – FAPERJ (Research Support Foundation of Rio de Janeiro) and Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico – CNPq (National Council for Scientific and Technological Development).

Supervisors: professor Italo Matias and professor João Rangel.

  2. Laboratory of the InfoRoyalties web Portal

InfoRoyalties is the database developed and maintained by the Universidade Candido Mendes‒Campos, which goal is to make it easy the access to information about the distribution of oil royalties among the Brazilian municipalities.

In a way to collaborate to the strengthened of discussions about the distribution of oil royalties, the InfoRoyalties is a free and open source tool, available for researchers, scholars, journalists, public managers and society in general.

For that, it presents information from different sources and shows its own indicators that make that tool a unique database and an original source, as its information allows permanent analyses of strategic aspects related to the political-administrative dynamics of municipalities that receive oil revenues (royalties and governmental participation).

It occupies 12 m2 and has six computers.

Supervisors: professor Eduardo Shimoda and professor Italo Matias.

  3. Laboratory of Hydraulics, Pneumatics and Automation

This laboratory is of common use among students of graduation and post-graduation. Beyond regular class time, the master students in Industrial Engineering can carry out tests necessary to their dissertations. Today, the student

Gustavo Rodrigues Fraga has been executing tests related to his dissertation in this laboratory under the supervision of professor Italo Matias.

It occupies an area of 107 m2 and has the following equipment:

    • Two computers
    • One bench for tests of hydraulic and electro-hydraulic systems of Bosch Rexroth manufacturer
    • One bench for tests of pneumatic and electro-pneumatic systems of Festo manufacturer
    • One bench of thermodynamic analysis and industrial refrigeration, with a supervisory system for variable control of Automatus manufacturer.

The equipment of this laboratory was fully acquired by resources of the University in 2015.

  4. Laboratory of the Engineering courses used under demand

    • General Laboratory of Physics
    • General Laboratory of Chemistry
    • Laboratory of Health and Work Safety
    • Laboratory of Metallography
    • Laboratory of Mechanical Rehearsal
    • Laboratory of Fluid Mechanics
    • Laboratory of Thermal Machinery
    • Laboratory of  Manufacturing Processes
    • Laboratory of  Solder
    • Laboratory of Electric Equipment

In addition to computers, the laboratories are equipped with the following equipment: One monochromatic laser print; four servers are used for different purposes, such as:

    1. Users authentication
    2. File Server (area of FTP and didactic material of teachers and students)
    3. Print Server
    4. Media Server via DLNA protocol

Moreover, 22 UniFi AP-Pro radios were acquired in order to distribute the signal of the wireless network throughout the University. To access, the student informs his/her registration number and his/her Cadastro de Pessoa Física-CPF (a Brazilian code identification). Then, he/she has access to the internet through a dedicated and separated network of the informatics laboratories and administrative network.
